What is Robotics as a Service (RaaS)?
RaaS is a subscription model where you pay a monthly fee for a robot, its software, support and maintenance, rather than buying the hardware outright.

Robotics as a Service removes the capital outlay that has traditionally kept autonomous cleaning and delivery robots out of reach for smaller operators. Instead of purchasing a machine outright, you pay a fixed monthly fee that bundles the robot, software updates, remote monitoring, servicing and, in most cases, a replacement unit if something breaks down.
For UK facilities and cleaning contract managers, this matters because it turns a five-figure capital purchase into an operating expense that can be budgeted against existing labour or contract cleaning lines. It also shifts performance risk onto the supplier: if the robot underperforms or breaks down, the RaaS provider has a direct financial incentive to fix it quickly, because they are still being paid to keep it running.
Contracts typically run 12 to 36 months and include service-level commitments around uptime, response times and coverage area. Buyers should check what happens at contract end — some providers roll into a new unit automatically, others require a fresh agreement.

- Usually cheaper upfront and easier to budget, though total cost over three-plus years can be similar to a purchase plus service contract. The main advantage is avoiding capital risk and getting maintenance bundled in.
- What happens if the robot breaks down under RaaS?
- A reputable RaaS provider will repair or swap the unit at no extra cost, since uptime is their responsibility under the service agreement, not an optional extra.
- Can I cancel a RaaS contract early?
- Most contracts have a minimum term with an early-termination charge, similar to a leased vehicle or equipment contract. Check the notice period before signing.
