What is Robot Mapping?

Mapping is the process of recording a building's layout so a robot can plan routes, avoid obstacles and return to known locations such as its dock.

Before a robot can operate independently, it needs a map of the site it will work in. This is usually created by walking or driving the robot around the space once, during which its LiDAR and cameras record walls, fixed obstacles, doorways and other features using SLAM.

Once the map is built, cleaning or delivery routes, no-go zones and priority areas can be set within it — for example, keeping the robot away from a stage area during events, or ensuring it covers a busy corridor twice a shift. Maps can be updated at any time if the layout changes materially, such as after a refit.

Good mapping is the foundation of reliable robot performance: a poor or outdated map leads to missed coverage, unnecessary re-routing, or the robot getting stuck. Suppliers should offer re-mapping support as part of an ongoing service agreement.

How often does a robot need re-mapping?
Only after significant layout changes — a refit, new fixed furniture, or a change of use for an area — day-to-day changes are handled automatically.
Who does the initial mapping?
Typically a technician does this during installation, walking the robot's intended routes so the map reflects real operating conditions.
