What is Autonomous Floor Scrubber?

An autonomous floor scrubber is a self-driving cleaning robot that washes, scrubs and dries hard floors without an operator walking or riding it.

Autonomous floor scrubbers do the same job as a walk-behind or ride-on scrubber-dryer — applying cleaning solution, scrubbing with brushes or pads, and squeegee-drying the floor in one pass — but they do it on a programmed route, unattended. Once mapped, they can run overnight, during quiet periods, or alongside a smaller cleaning team on the busiest shifts.

For UK facilities managers, the main appeal is consistency and coverage: the robot cleans the same route to the same standard every time, and can run at hours when hiring a cleaner is expensive or impractical. It also frees staff for tasks that genuinely need a person — detail cleaning, washrooms, spot response — rather than large open-floor coverage.

Suitable environments include retail floors, warehouses, hospital corridors, schools and leisure centres. Site surveys typically check floor type, obstacles, charging point location and any areas needing manual attention, since scrubbers are not a full replacement for a cleaning team on complex sites.
